On December 5, 2015 Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation will be hosting our 48th Annual Membership Meeting. The theme this year perfectly encompasses what we do all year long: Building Community Together. 

As you know, Bickerdike’s affordable housing development initiatives include homeownership, rental and co-op development. We provide quality, resident-centered property and asset management services for over 1,000 units, which house over 3,000 residents across five neighborhoods.  Our award-winning affordable housing continues to provide homes for long-time residents who would otherwise be priced out of their rapidly changing neighborhoods. Soon we will bring 72 new units to west Humboldt Park through the development of our Nelson Mandela Apartments.

We always look for ways to benefit community businesses and individuals in all that we do. Each spring our Garden Committee shops locally for the flowers, fruits and vegetables planted in our two community gardens. Additionally, we design many of our buildings to house local social service agencies so they can stay near the people they serve. Finally, every time we construct or rehabilitate a property, we use neighborhood vendors, which bring jobs to the local economy.

We do not do this work alone. We cultivate community leaders by training and supporting people in our service area so they can stand up for and drive the decision-making for community priorities. We advocated for the revision of the Affordable Requirements Ordinance (ARO) to increase the number of badly needed affordable units that market-rate developers are required to provide. We also secured seats for community members on the 606 Park Advisory Council to ensure the trail is and remains inclusive. In short, we worked side by side with our residents, members, and neighbors to make sure all voices were heard on the issues that affect us the most.

Today, we reach out to community partners like you with a request to support this work by sponsoring our annual event.
