Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation

Support Community Development: Sponsor Our Annual Membership Meeting

“I recently found out that one house on my street is valued at $800,000 and another just sold for $1 million dollars!  But every day the people in those houses open their doors and step outside to leave for work. And so do I.  We are the same.   We all want the same thing: a place to call home.  I know I can hold my head high because I have the same right to be there as they do.  That is something I learned first, from my mother and later, from Bickerdike.”  ~Margo Timberlake-Silva, Bickerdike Member since 1989

Margo gave this powerful testimony at our 50th Anniversary Gala Celebration last spring. She summed up perfectly why Bickerdike is here: to ensure that the people we serve have decent, comfortable, affordable places to live. She also understands the value of Bickerdike Membership, which is to use her voice and her vote to help us continue to do this critical work.  She will join our members on December 1, 2018 when Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation will host our Annual Membership Meeting, our most important event of the year.

At the meeting, we will report on the year’s accomplishments, elect our Board of Directors, and approve resolutions to guide our work in 2019. This year’s theme is one everyone can relate to – Our Story Begins at Home. Everyone deserves a place to put down roots, feel secure, and to make memories. This is essentially why Bickerdike was created.

Bickerdike was established in 1967 by a group of individuals and representatives of local community organizations on Chicago’s near northwest side. This group of neighbors joined forces to ensure that long-time residents would have a stake in their community’s future. Today resident-driven community development is still vital to helping neighborhoods thrive. Bickerdike continues to build high quality, award-winning affordable housing in West Town, Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Avondale, and Hermosa. We are committed to community development and investment that is both sensitive to resident needs and allows long-term residents to benefit from it.

This has been another highly productive year for Bickerdike.  We have made significant progress on some of the largest development projects in our history. Our large-scale rehabilitation project of over 300 of our older apartments is past the half-way point. Hundreds of grateful residents have moved back into their beautifully renovated homes and we are on track to complete the ones that remain by mid-2019.  More construction and the first move-ins are happening at Phase 1A of Lathrop, a mixed income, 414-unit development; Phase 1B will get underway next year. Over our 51-year history, we have built or rehabbed over 1,646 affordable rental and for sale units. We also provide resident-centered property and asset management services for 1,094 rental units, which house over 3,200 residents

Bickerdike is committed to hiring and collaborating locally. We want to bring jobs and economic prosperity to our local residents and businesses in our target communities so we choose local contractors and vendors whenever possible. While we are proud of our constantly growing housing portfolio and the strides we have made in the public policy arena to protect the future of affordable housing, we are most gratified by the impact of our presence in communities. Every one of Bickerdike’s buildings, and every resident family, helps to anchor the stability of its block – a ripple effect that benefits whole neighborhoods.

“I was looking for a place that was more affordable… I was lucky. Bickerdike helped me when I needed them…at the moment I needed them.”
~Glori Vega, mother of three and Bickerdike resident
