On December 3, 2016 Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation will host our 49th Annual Membership Meeting and we hope you choose to support this event, the most important one we host all year. At the meeting we will report on the year’s accomplishments, elect our Board of Directors and approve resolutions to guide our work in 2017. The meeting’s theme this year conveys perfectly the many facets of our work: Building Revitalizing Connecting.
As you know, Bickerdike builds quality affordable housing in five community areas; we also offer resident-centered property and asset management services for over 1,000 units, which house over 3,000 residents in 139 buildings. To date, we have built or rehabbed over 1,328 affordable rental and for sale units. We recently added to our already vast portfolio. This fall we begin to welcome our newest residents as they move into our 72-unit Nelson Mandela Apartments in west Humboldt Park. We are proud to continue to provide homes for long-time community residents who would otherwise be priced out of some of the fastest changing neighborhoods in Chicago.
While we continuously develop new housing, we are also preserving our aging buildings. To that end, Bickerdike will work over the next few years to preserve and rehabilitate 570 units in our oldest properties. Faithful to our mission to create and preserve jobs for local residents, Bickerdike prioritizes hiring and collaborating locally. Many staff live in our communities and several even live in our housing. Every time we construct or rehabilitate a property, we use neighborhood home improvement stores and contractors to bring jobs and add to the local economy.
Next year is our 50th anniversary! We hope you will celebrate with us at a very special event we are planning. While we are proud to be one of the first community development organizations to reach that milestone; it also shows that here we are 50 years later and the need for affordable housing is as great as ever. This year, over 2,600 people applied for a spot on our wait lists and a chance to become one of our residents. They are why we will persevere to build more housing, revitalize more communities, and connect people to the resources they need to more fully participate in and reap the economic benefits of new development.
